The third largest city in southern Germany, Munich is the capital city of the state of Bavaria. It is located on the Isar river River, north of the Bavarian Alps. More than five illion people live in the city Metropolitan area, that includes the municipalities of Augsburg, Igolstadt, Rosenheim and Landshut. The city's name – München -- is derived from the German word for 'monk,' a reminder of the fact that monks of the Benedictine order originally founded the city. The city's coat of arms – with black and gold colours indicating Munich's historical alliance to the Catholic Church -- show the image a monk.
A 2007 survey ranked Munich as among the world's top 10 cities with highest quality of life. However, the same survey also ranked the city as the world's 39th most expensive city to live in and as the most expensive major city in Germany! Munich enjoys a thriving economy, driven by the information technology, biotechnology, and publishing sectors.
After World War II Munich was one of the few cities which was completely rebuilt following its original,pre-war street grid. The majority of Munich's landmarks buildings, churches, avenues and streets were reconstructed. A survey on behalf of the National Geographic Traveler magazine of the world's 100 most interesting historic cities, ranked Munich as the 30th best destination.
The city's altitude and proximity to the Bavarian Alps mean that winters can be rather cold, but heavy rainfall is rare in this period. In February, the average high temperature is 4ºC (39ºF), the average low -4ºC (25ºF). The lowest temperature even recorded in the city stood at -23ºC (9ºF).
